Please join us for our 2nd Lafayette event, this Friday, July 11th, at 1pm at the Hammond Pavilion across from the City Admin building. It is almost 200 yrs to the day that the Marquis paid a second visit to Joseph Bonaparte at Point Breeze. Lafayette re-enactor, Michael Halbert, will speak (he did a great job when he spoke about Lafayette last September), as will BHS Director Peter Tucci, and Paul Larson, Chair, NJ Lafayette Bicentennial Committee - American Friends of Lafayette and Vice President of the Lawrence Historical Society.

The Marquis was one of the most consequential people in helping us defeat the British. His first visit to Pt Breeze was in September 1824. We celebrated that event last September with speeches and the dedication of a beautiful marker commemorating his visit.

Please join us this Friday and learn more about and honor this incredible man.

Below is the beautiful Lafayette Tour marker, now located at the entrance to Point Breeze. It was dedicated last September and was donated to us by the William C. Pomeroy Foundation.

Robin L. Thomas specializes in European architecture and urbanism from 1400-1800. Focusing on the architecture of Naples, his interests include early-modern urbanism, the social history of buildings, music and space, and the intellectual formation of the architect. His first book, Architecture, and Statecraft: Charles of Bourbon’s Naples 1734–59 (2013), examined the remaking of Naples under King Charles of Bourbon and addressed the political, social, economic, and cultural importance of the royal building program. His second book project, titled, Palaces of Reason: the Royal Residences of Enlightenment Naples, will examine the palaces of Capodimonte, Portici, and Caserta in light of eighteenth-century ideas of reform. Other publications include articles on the Duca diNoja’s map of Naples, the architect Luigi Vanvitelli as reader and author, the Teatro di San Carlo, architects’ libraries, slavery and construction at the Palace of Caserta, and the guglie of Naples. His research has been supported by a Fulbright Fellowship, a Mrs. Giles Whiting Foundation Fellowship in the Humanities, a fellowship at the Bill and Carol Fox Center for Humanistic Inquiry at Emory University, and an Andrew W. Mellon Fellowship at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In recognition of his classroom instruction, he received the College of Arts and Architecture’s award for outstanding teaching in 2014.

The lecture is free but as always donations are appreciated. Please register for this event.

The BHS is kicking off our celebration of RevWar 250 - the 250th anniversary of the War for Independence with an outdoor event presenting tradespersons and their crafts during the 1770’s – 1800 time period, including armaments and colonial militia involved in the War for Independence. The event will present an opportunity for attendees of all ages to learn about how goods necessary for everyday life were made and acquired. We are partnering with various practitioners of traditional crafting methods such as a blacksmith, spinner/weaver/knotter, cooper, candle maker, gardener/farmer, herbalist, fisherman, leather worker, and glass blower to demonstrate their craft and art in an engaging and educational manner. A regiment from the Colonial Line will set up an encampment and demonstrate camping skills and armaments used during the War for Independence. Artisans will be encouraged to offer their wares for sale and books and maps related to the local colonial settlements will be presented as well. A craft tent for children will offer a creative craft reminiscent of colonial times and present a fun educational experience for very young learners. Period music will be played by musicians who specialize in the music and music history of the time.

A Lenni Lenape historian and story teller, in conjunction with the Discovery Center at Point Breeze, will present a brief history of the Lenape tribes in Bordentown and the surrounding area in the early colonial days and depict their lifestyle, culture, and relationship with colonial settlers.

You will not want to miss this very exciting and educational event!!!!
